Exporting from Thailand to Brazil

Asia's automotive and rubber powerhouse. Motorcycle parts, auto components, and electronics drive bilateral trade with no preferential access.

Updated May 2026

Thailand is Brazil's 27th largest import origin and a major automotive parts supplier. As ASEAN's largest automotive producer ("Detroit of Asia"), Thailand exports motorcycle components, auto body parts, and engines to Brazil's vehicle manufacturers. Electronics, rubber products, and canned seafood complement the trade mix. There is no FTA between Thailand and Mercosur — Thai goods pay full MFN tariffs.

No preferential trade agreement

Thailand has no FTA with Brazil or Mercosur. Thai goods pay the full TEC. Mercosur-Thailand FTA has been discussed but no formal negotiations. EU competitors benefit from EU-Mercosur with tariffs declining annually.

Key concepts

?What is an NCM code?

NCM (Nomenclatura Comum do Mercosul) is Brazil's 8-digit tariff classification code. The first 6 digits match the international HS (Harmonized System) code — the remaining 2 are Mercosur-specific. Every import tax rate in Brazil is determined by the NCM code.

?What is a CNPJ?

CNPJ (Cadastro Nacional da Pessoa Jurídica) is Brazil's national business registry number — equivalent to an EIN (US), Company Number (UK), or Handelsregisternummer (Germany). Every company that imports into Brazil must have a CNPJ.

?What is RADAR?

RADAR (Registro e Rastreamento da Atuação dos Intervenientes Aduaneiros) is Receita Federal's mandatory import/export authorization. Your Brazilian buyer needs active RADAR before any goods can clear customs. It comes in three modalities with different value limits.

CIF/FOB gap

Brazil reports 12.6% more imports from Thailand than Thailand reports in exports. This CIF/FOB spread is typical — Brazil values at CIF (including freight & insurance), while Thailand values at FOB (port of departure). Large gaps can also indicate re-exports through third countries.

Automotive parts: the core of bilateral trade

Thailand's automotive industry is deeply integrated into global supply chains, including Brazil's:

  • Motorcycle parts (HS 8714): $180M — components for Honda, Yamaha Brazilian assembly
  • Auto body parts, brakes, gear boxes: over $600M combined — OEM supply to Brazilian automakers
  • Vehicles (HS 8703): pick-up trucks from Thai factories (Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi L200)
  • 14-35% tariffs — auto parts at 14-18%, finished vehicles at 35%
  • EU competitive gap: EU automakers benefit from EU-Mercosur phase-out on parts

Rubber: the world's largest producer

Thailand is the world's largest natural rubber producer and a major tire exporter:

  • Rubber gloves (HS 4015): surgical and industrial gloves
  • Tires (HS 4011): passenger and truck tires — potential anti-dumping exposure
  • Natural rubber: raw material for Brazilian tire manufacturers (Pirelli Brasil)

Regulatory requirements

  • INMETRO — auto parts, tires, electronics, electrical accessories
  • Anatel — telecommunications equipment, wireless devices
  • MAPA — canned seafood, rice, food products
  • ANVISA — rubber gloves (medical), food products

Practical next steps

  1. Find your product's NCM code
  2. Check for anti-dumping duties on rubber/tire products
  3. Check Ex-Tarifário status for specialized machinery
  4. Calculate the full landed cost
  5. Verify INMETRO and Anatel requirements
