Exporting from Spain to Brazil

EU-Mercosur tariff elimination, GI protection for Spanish wines and olive oil, and leveraging cultural proximity for the Brazilian market.

EU-Mercosur: in force since May 2026

Spain is one of Brazil's most important European trading partners, with deep cultural and linguistic ties. Spanish exports to Brazil combine industrial goods (machinery, vehicles, ceramics) with premium food and beverage products (olive oil, wine, Iberian ham). The EU-Mercosur agreement gives Spanish companies preferential tariff access and legal protection for iconic products like Rioja, Cava, and Jerez.

Your EU advantage + cultural proximity

Spanish companies benefit from EU-Mercosur tariff elimination, GI protection for premium products, and a natural cultural advantage — Spanish and Portuguese are mutually intelligible, giving Spanish exporters easier communication with Brazilian partners than any other European country.

Olive oil and Mediterranean foods

Spain is the world's largest olive oil producer, and Brazil is a growing consumer market. The EU-Mercosur agreement eliminates the 10% import duty on olive oil over 10 years — a game-changer for Spanish producers competing against Argentine olive oil (which enters duty-free as a Mercosur product).

  • Olive oil (HS 1509): 10% duty phasing to 0% over 10 years
  • Prepared olives: 14% duty phasing to 0%
  • Cured meats: Jamón Ibérico, chorizo — TRQ access + phase-out. GI protection for Jamón de Huelva, Guijuelo
  • Cheese: Manchego — GI protection + TRQ access (30,000t EU-wide cheese TRQ)

Wine, Cava & Sherry

Spanish wines are already popular in Brazil, and EU-Mercosur accelerates access:

  • Still wine: 27% duty → 0% in 12 years
  • Cava (sparkling): 20% duty → 0% in 10 years
  • Sherry / Jerez: GI protection — Brazilian products cannot use the name
  • Rioja, Priorat, Ribera del Duero: GI protection in Brazil under the agreement

Ceramics and construction materials

Spain is a global leader in ceramic tile production (Castellón cluster). Brazil is itself a major ceramics producer, but Spanish tiles compete in the premium segment:

  • Ceramic tiles (HS 6907): 14% duty phasing to 0% under EU-Mercosur
  • INMETRO certification required for construction ceramics sold in Brazil
  • Competition: Brazilian ceramics (Santa Gertrudes, Portobello) dominate the mass market. Spanish tiles compete on design and large-format innovation

Regulatory requirements

  • ANVISA — food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals. AEMPS (Spanish) registration does not replace ANVISA. EU-Mercosur GMP mutual recognition may speed pharma approvals
  • INMETRO — electrical equipment, construction materials, toys. CE marking does NOT replace INMETRO
  • MAPA — olive oil, cured meats, dairy. Phytosanitary certificates required. EU-Mercosur SPS provisions should streamline procedures
?What is an NCM code?

NCM (Nomenclatura Comum do Mercosul) is Brazil's 8-digit tariff classification code. The first 6 digits match the international HS (Harmonized System) code — the remaining 2 are Mercosur-specific. Every import tax rate in Brazil is determined by the NCM code.

?What is a CNPJ?

CNPJ (Cadastro Nacional da Pessoa Jurídica) is Brazil's national business registry number — equivalent to an EIN (US), Company Number (UK), or Handelsregisternummer (Germany). Every company that imports into Brazil must have a CNPJ.

?What is RADAR?

RADAR (Registro e Rastreamento da Atuação dos Intervenientes Aduaneiros) is Receita Federal's mandatory import/export authorization. Your Brazilian buyer needs active RADAR before any goods can clear customs. It comes in three modalities with different value limits.
