AM Rank #6 — Special economic zone

Port of Manaus

Gateway to Brazil's Zona Franca de Manaus (ZFM) — a special economic zone with exemptions on import duty (II), IPI, and ICMS for qualifying manufacturing operations. Not a general import port, but transformative for the right use case.

What makes Manaus different

Manaus is not a conventional import port — it's the entry point to Brazil's Zona Franca de Manaus, a special economic zone created in 1967 and extended through 2073. Companies that manufacture within the ZFM benefit from suspension or exemption of II, IPI, and reduced ICMS on imported inputs.

This makes Manaus the port of choice for electronics manufacturers (Samsung, LG, Honda, Yamaha, and hundreds of others operate ZFM factories). The total tax savings can reach 40–60% compared to importing finished goods through Santos.

How ZFM imports work

To benefit from ZFM incentives, your Brazilian buyer must be a SUFRAMA-registered manufacturer operating within the designated industrial district of Manaus. They submit a PPB (Processo Produtivo Básico) that defines minimum local content and manufacturing steps required to qualify for the tax benefits.

Imports are cleared through SUFRAMA's dedicated system, which runs parallel to the standard Siscomex process. This dedicated channel typically results in faster clearance (3–6 days).

Logistics: the river factor

Manaus is a river port accessible via the Amazon River from the Atlantic. Ocean vessels can reach Manaus, but the 1,500 km river journey adds transit time compared to coastal ports. Finished goods manufactured in the ZFM are typically shipped to São Paulo and other markets by cabotage (coastal shipping) or air freight.

When Manaus is relevant

  • Your buyer manufactures in the ZFM — massive tax savings on inputs
  • Electronics components and CKD kits — the ZFM's core import category
  • Long-term manufacturing partnership — ZFM benefits favor established operations

When Manaus is NOT the right port

  • General consumer goods — ZFM benefits don't apply to finished imports for resale
  • One-off shipments — SUFRAMA registration and PPB are for ongoing operations
  • Time-sensitive goods — river transit adds days vs. coastal ports
