Southern Brazil's main port

Rio Grande is the southernmost major port in Brazil, located at the entrance to the Lagoa dos Patos. It serves as the primary import gateway for Rio Grande do Sul state and a strategic node for overland trade with Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay via the Mercosur highway corridor.

The port has invested in modern container handling at its Tecon Rio Grande terminal, operated by Wilson Sons, with capacity for continued growth.

ICMS at 17%: matching the minimum

Like Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul charges the constitutional minimum ICMS of 17%. This makes Rio Grande competitive on tax terms with Itajaí, while serving a different geographic market. For importers whose final destination is RS, this port combines the lowest ICMS with the shortest inland freight.

Best product categories

Machinery Wind energy equipment Chemical products Automotive parts

Rio Grande is a major hub for wind energy equipment imports — turbine blades, nacelles, and tower sections arrive here for wind farms across southern Brazil. It's also strong in machinery, chemicals, and automotive parts for the RS industrial base (which includes major GM and other automotive plants).

The Mercosur advantage

Companies that import through Brazil and re-export or distribute to Argentina and Uruguay benefit from Rio Grande's proximity to the border. The BR-290 and BR-116 highways connect directly to the crossings at Uruguaiana (Argentina) and Chuí/Jaguarão (Uruguay).

When Rio Grande makes sense

  • Final destination in RS — lowest total cost (17% ICMS + minimal freight)
  • Wind energy equipment — specialized handling infrastructure
  • Mercosur distribution — closest port to Argentina/Uruguay borders
  • Want 17% ICMS without SC's TTD complexity — simpler tax structure
